Cadaqués keeps a handful of fixed dates on its calendar each year, and knowing them helps decide when to come, whether that means arriving for the music or deliberately avoiding the crowds.
Cadaqués International Music Festival
The Cadaqués International Music Festival has run every summer since the 1970s and is held in the Church of Santa Maria, the parish church that stands on raised ground above the harbour. It is considered one of the most outstanding cultural events in the region.
Summer Cultural Week
Cadaqués also holds a Summer Cultural Week, which includes a literature competition among its activities. It sits alongside the music festival as part of the town's wider summer cultural programme.
Festival of the Indianos
The Festival of the Indianos takes place in June. It draws on Cadaqués's history of emigration and return, a thread that runs through much of the town's built heritage, and gives visitors a specifically local reason to time a June trip around it.
The Dolls' Race
During the summer patronal festival, Cadaqués holds a traditional race known as the dolls' race. The "dolls" are the green glazed earthenware jugs that women of the village once used to carry water from the fountains, so the race is a direct, physical link to a daily custom that no longer exists in practice but is preserved as a competition.
Sunrise Gathering at Cap de Creus
At the Cap de Creus lighthouse, people gather for what's known as the Sunrise Gathering, timed to catch the first sunrise of the year from the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a distinct, calendar-anchored event rather than a general lookout stop, and worth planning around if an early-January visit is on the table.
Peak Season and Crowds
Cadaqués has an official population of around 2,000, recorded as 2,752 in 2018, but that number can swell to as much as ten times higher during the peak of the summer tourism season. The crowding is severe enough that in some summers the police have declared the town full and turned people away at its edge. Anyone weighing a summer visit around the music festival or the Indianos festival should factor this in: the same weeks that bring the richest cultural calendar also bring the town closest to capacity.
